About Dr. Slater

Dr. James P. Slater earned his undergraduate degree from Franklin and Marshall College in 1982 and graduated from Case Western Reserve University’s School of Medicine in 1990 where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. He continued his medical training at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center as Intern, Resident, and Chief Resident in General Surgery. Remaining at Columbia-Presbyterian, he then completed his Fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery and post-Fellowship training in Cardiac Transplantation and Mechanical Circulatory Support. Dr. Slater also served as a research fellow to Dr. Mehmet Oz, resulting in numerous peer reviewed publications and presentations at national meetings on the topic of Left Ventricular Assist Devices. He was Board Certified in General Surgery in 1997 and has been Board Certified in Thoracic Surgery since 2000.

Dr. Slater joined Mid Atlantic Surgical Associates in 1999. His practice encompasses all facets of Adult Cardiac Surgery. Dr. Slater’s particular interests include: Off-Pump/Beating Heart Surgery, minimally invasive surgical revascularization, surgical ablation for cardiac arrhythmias, minimally invasive valve surgery and the surgical treatment of congestive heart failure.

Dr. Slater is the Surgical Director of the Circulatory Support Program at Morristown Medical Center. Circulatory Support offers a full array of devices to support patients suffering from either acute or chronic heart failure syndromes. The Left Ventricular Assist Device Program at Morristown is among the first of its kind in the country to achieve JHACO Certification and remains the only non-transplant accredited program in New Jersey. Dr. Slater implanted the first FDA approved Thoratec HeartMate II Device for destination therapy in the United States.

Dr. Slater’s most recent research effort resulted in a major publication in the Annals of Thoracic Surgery on the use of Cerebral Oximetry during coronary bypass grafting. This paper is the result of a multi-year, prospectively randomized trial monitoring oxygen saturation in the brain during cardiac surgery conducted exclusively at Morristown Medical Center. This study is frequently cited as one of three major studies which supports the use of Cerebral Oximetry. Dr. Slater lectures nationally on the use of this device.

Dr. Slater is a native of Boston, Massachusetts. His non-medical work experiences include internships in the US House of Representatives and the House of Commons, London England. Prior to attending medical school, Dr. Slater worked on the Senate Staff of Charles H. Percy, United States Senator, Ilinois.
