About Dr. Shea
Dr. Nicholas J. Shea is a native of the tristate area. He earned his undergraduate degree from Columbia University, where he graduated cum laude with a degree in mathematics and economics. He received his medical doctorate degree from Columbia University and also holds a master of science in biomedical engineering from Columbia University.
Dr. Shea trained in cardiothoracic surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center, where he gained particular experience in valve repair, mechanical circulatory support, and the treatment of aortic disease.
He performs procedures in all areas of adult cardiac surgery. His clinical interests focus on mitral valve repair, total arterial coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), and the use of mechanical support for complex and high risk cardiovascular procedures. He has extensive experience in the management of aortic aneurysms and valve-sparing techniques for aortic root disease, and he treats patients in the Atlantic Aortic Center.
Dr. Shea cares for his patients holistically, recognizing each patient’s unique story and needs. He believes in the value of personalized care and attention, from a patient’s first office visit through their entire hospital stay and follow up. He focuses his practice on ensuring patients have a full understanding of their disease while offering solutions that utilize state of the art techniques.
He has published extensively on surgical management of aortic disease, heart failure, surgical innovation, and structural valve disease. He’s a member of the American College of Surgeons, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the American Heart Association, the American Association of Thoracic Surgeons, the American Medical Association, and the New York Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
